What changed after the original research

Original research cutoff: . A bounded review on checked the official Bengali law database and relevant gazette pages. It replaces the earlier legal summary with the 2026 statutory sequence; it does not renew all earlier tax, enforcement or market claims.

The English law titles and explanations here are editorial translations. The Bengali texts control. For advice about a particular activity or proceeding, consult a lawyer admitted in Bangladesh.

Enforcement powers and institutional responsibilities

Section 38 authorizes the government or its designated authority to block, remove or prohibit gambling-related websites, apps and other digital destinations. The provision also covers replacement domains. These are statutory powers; they are not a count of sites actually blocked.

Section 43 allocates specific duties: BTRC handles blocking measures; Bangladesh Bank and BFIU address gambling-related financial activity; CID handles investigation and digital forensics; and the National Cyber Protection Agency provides cyber-threat analysis and technical support. The section also assigns work to other ministries and agencies. It does not rank Bangladesh's enforcement against another country's.

The earlier page's cumulative blocking and account-freezing figures were not re-established from the underlying regulator or police releases. They are withdrawn from this summary. No complete prosecution search was performed, and no absence of a reported player case is treated as protection from liability.

What tournament history can establish

A documented tournament result can establish an event, date and recorded performance. It cannot by itself establish a player's present residence, a licensed domestic poker room or permission to participate from Bangladesh.

The earlier guide cited a Hendon Mob ranking link. Direct access returned a 403 response during this review, so its current contents were not verified. This revision makes no fresh claim about rankings, domestic rooms or tour schedules, and does not turn an incomplete event search into a claim that no event has ever occurred.

Research and safety resources

Use the named statutes for their own scope and dates. Specific criminal, tax or historical-case questions need appropriately qualified Bangladeshi advice. The earlier unverified 25% winnings-tax summary is withdrawn; this review supplies no replacement tax rate or filing instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bangladesh's gambling law expressly cover poker?

Yes. Section 2(6)(b) of the Gambling Prevention Act 2026 includes conducting or participating in poker for money or value within its gambling definition. This is a direct statutory reference, not a conclusion drawn from a foreign operator's licence or whether a website opens. Application to an individual's circumstances requires qualified Bangladeshi legal advice.

Can the online provisions apply to players as well as operators?

Yes. Section 2(2) includes opening, operating or using an online gambling account, as well as operating platforms and acting for foreign platforms. Section 5 creates the online or remote gambling offence; section 16 provides a maximum of five years imprisonment, a fine of Tk 1 crore, or both. This is not an automatic sentence or a prediction about any individual case.

Is the old section 20 still the current online-gambling provision?

No. The 2025 Cyber Protection Ordinance was replaced by the Cyber Protection Act 2026. Act 99 of 1 July 2026 then deleted section 20 of that Act. The Gambling Prevention Act 2026, dated the same day, provides the separate gambling framework. Deleting the cyber-law section did not establish permission to gamble.

Do all gambling activities carry the same penalty?

No. The July Act separates general gambling, online or remote gambling, online betting, promotion and other conduct. The table above distinguishes three statutory maxima. It does not select a charge for a particular case, describe sentencing practice or establish that only one provision could be relevant.

What does this page establish about enforcement?

It identifies statutory blocking powers and the responsibilities assigned to BTRC, Bangladesh Bank, BFIU, CID and the National Cyber Protection Agency. It does not verify a complete count of blocked sites, frozen accounts or prosecutions. The absence of a reported case cannot establish that participation is permitted or safe.

Does this review establish a tax rate or current poker venue?

No. The earlier 25% winnings-tax summary was not established from a current primary tax source in this review and is withdrawn. No current domestic poker room, event schedule or player ranking is verified here. A tournament result or a tax rule would not itself establish permission to participate in Bangladesh.

Primary sources and remaining limits

Selected official records were checked on 27 September 2026. The Ministry of Law's Bengali database provides readable text; relevant gazette pages were also visually checked because PDF text extraction was unreliable. English labels on this page are translations, not a separately authenticated English edition.

Some individual database links intermittently timed out or returned incomplete text; the full-law view and relevant gazette pages supplied the core statutory checks. This review does not establish later court interpretations, individual sentencing, complete enforcement totals, current tax treatment or service availability.
